Diflucan 

Yeast infections are common in many women, and they are usually easy to treat. Many women will use vaginal treatments, but some prefer oral medications. Oral medications are often more effective against stubborn infections. If you have recurrent vaginal yeast infections, your doctor may suggest long term maintenance therapy with oral medicines.

One of the most popular oral meds for yeast infections is Diflucan. Diflucan is used for a variety of infections, not just yeast infections, and is effective for many people.

Diflucan can come with some side effects. Those who take other medications or have other illnesses may be particularly at risk. Diflucan interacts with many drugs and herbal remedies, prescription or otherwise. Additionally, it is important to avoid alcohol and driving (Diflucan may cause dizziness).

Due to the possibility of interactions and side effects, it’s important that you see your doctor before using Diflucan for the first time. However, it is tolerated well and is effective for many women.

Femstat 

If you’ve had a yeast infection before, you may recognize the symptoms and can choose an over the counter medication for yourself. If you’re unsure of your symptoms or have never had a yeast infection before, it may be necessary to see a doctor.

Femstat is a topical medication that is inserted into the vagina. It is extremely common and is available over the counter. Though symptoms may disappear quickly when using Femstat, it is important to continue using the medication as directed for the full period of time instructed, or your infection may come back.

Side effects are unusual, but in rare cases they are severe. If you experience any side effects, tell your doctor immediately. Do not use tampons or douches while using Femstat. Femstat can also weaken or damage latex birth control products, i.e. condoms and diaphragms. For three days after completing treatment you should use alternative birth control methods.

Femstat is useful for many women and is generally considered safe. However, only your doctor can tell you if it’s appropriate for you.

Monistat 

Yeast infections are common in many women, and they are usually easy to treat. If it’s your first yeast infection it may be particularly hard to self-diagnose, but if you have had one before you may choose to use an over the counter product. If you are not certain of your symptoms, you should see a doctor immediately.

Monistat, like Femstat, is a topical medication that is inserted into the vagina. If necessary, it can be applied to the vulva as well.  No prescription is needed, and it’s flexible in that you have options depending on your needs. You can get a single-dose treatment, or a three or seven day course. A single-dose treatment is the least expensive, but it may not be sufficient to clear up an infection fully.

Monistat may come with side effects, including menstrual cramps, burning in the vaginal area, or headaches. If your side effects stick around or become very strong, you should tell a doctor immediately. Monistat may interact with other treatments, so carefully read the instructions in the package and speak with your doctor until you are sure that Monistat is safe for you.

Monistat can weaken or damage latex birth control products, including diaphragms and condoms. Polyurethane condoms are a safe alternative to these. Alternative forms of birth control should be used for at least 3 days after using Monistat.
