Allegra
Allegra (Fexofenadine) is a prescription antihistamine. Unlike older anti-histamine medications, Allegra does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, and as such doesn’t cause drowsiness as easily. Allegra is used to treat a variety of allergy symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing, hives, and itchy eyes.
Allegra has fewer counter-indications that many similar allergy drugs, making it safer. However, it can still interact with other drugs dangerously under the wrong circumstances, so only a doctor can decide if it’s appropriate.
Allegra is an oral medication taken in pill form. Allegra should not be taken with juice (especially grapefruit, apple, or orange juice), because it won’t be as easily absorbed in the body. Antacids (like Tums) can cause a similar problem, lowering the effectiveness of Allegra. Some negative side effects do exist, such as stomach cramps, back paid, fever, and coughing, though these are often not present at all and typically not severe. In rare cases, patients may have a more extreme allergic reaction, though this is very uncommon. If you experience any strange side effects when taking Allerga, you should contact a doctor immediately.
Benadryl
Benadryl is a mild antihistamine in widespread use. It is a non-prescription allergy medication commonly available in a variety of forms, including pills, capsules, and strips.
Because it’s a first generation antihistamine, it can cause extreme drowsiness. Its primary purpose is to fight the same allergy symptoms other medications do – coughing, sneezing, runny nose, etc. However, it is sometimes used to help with motion sickness or sleeping problems as a result of the drowsiness side effect. Because of its sedative properties, it should not be taken with other sedatives, nor should it be taken with alcohol. It’s best to take it shortly before bedtime. It is unsafe to drive or operate heavy machinery after taking Benadryl.
Benadryl is both safe and effective for most people, including children. Children’s Benadryl is available at most pharmacies. Even so, a doctor should be consulted before using Benadryl or any other allergy medication to avoid dangerous interactions with other drugs or complications arising from your medical history.

Allergy symptoms often cause the nasal passages to become stuffy or swollen, which increases allergy problems.
